CHARACTERISTICS:
\nPlants take up copper mainly during their earliest growth stages. At cell level it acts as a chlorophyll stabiliser, fixing it within the chloroplasts (much as iron does) and delaying its early breakdown. It effectively extends the growing cycle by stepping up enzyme synthesis and encouraging nitrogen uptake. In many crops (potatoes, vines, tobacco) an adequate copper supply brings a marked improvement and increase in yield. Treatments on cereals (wheat, corn, barley, oats) are recommended when ear formation is hampered by Cu-deficiency, or when the grain is small and set on curved ears, or whitish leaves appear. In orchards too, a copper shortage can cause sharp production drops in both citrus and pome fruit trees, presenting as disorders that spoil the fruit.<\/p>\n
